They are there to assist children on how to act appropriately on ideas they form themselves. He states, “Every teacher should realize the dignity of his calling; that he is a social servant set apart for the maintenance of proper social order and the securing of the right social growth.” He believed that the teacher should become a partner in the learning process. He states, “The teacher is not in the school to impose certain ideas or to form certain habits in the child, but is there as a member of the community to select the influences which shall affect the child and to assist him in properly responding to these influences.” Teachers need to be aware of and never suppress a student’s interests. This naturally formed structure is not conducive to a cooperative, respectful, safe, learning environment. By careful observation, a teacher can learn valuable information and plot a strategic management plan, which uses the positive qualities of the hierarchy, such as student leadership, and rejects the negative qualities. While the teacher is observing her class, an equally intense reconnaissance of the teacher is being carried out by the students. With a thoughtful strategy, a teacher can change the destiny of her students (and herself), if she has the foresight and fortitude to commit to her plan of action. Self Management The students should be made aware of what their responsibilities are and exactly what is expected of them.
Here, work is judged on getting the answer correct, it is freer for students to make decisions, teachers communicate more with the students, but creativity still does not have a place in the classroom. These students have more of a chance to get out of the socioeconomic
Assess the view that the education system exists mainly to select and prepare young people for their future work roles One perspective that supports this is the functionalist view that secondary socialisation prepares children for work later on in life. They believe secondary socialisation does this as in a school environment you learn the norms and values of authority figures, for example, the teachers. Functionalists therefore believe that this can then later be applied in the work place as the norms and values are carried on however the authority figure role changes from teacher to boss. Generally, the text implies that primary socialisation isn’t enough in preparation for a large-scale society. Education, a secondary agency of socialisation
No one method will be suitable for all learners and all situations and the person responsible for the students learning must be prepared to be adaptable and use different methods in order to establish appropriate behaviour and an all inclusive environment in which to learn. Ground rules are necessary in all learning environments either express or implied. James Atherton (2009) believes that ground rules are the minimum necessary to enable learning to take place in the class. He goes onto to suggest that a teacher should know what they want in the list of ground rules before they start. He asks the question of teachers, if they don’t know what ground rules they want how will the students?
In Middle class schools students are expected to learn and follow the guidelines the teachers provide. Anyon analyzed that students in middle class schools must “follow the directions in order to get the right answers, but directions often call for some figuring, some choice, and some decision making.”(p128) Students should often figure out what the directions ask and solve the problem themselves. The teachers are there to give students the first step in order for them to succeed. Milpitas high is also an Affluent Professional school. In an Affluent Professional school students are encouraged to work and think independently, they are as Anyon said, “Constantly asked to express and apply ideas and concepts.”(p130) Suggesting that the
Students must be taught within themselves and not by society. Education will always be a part of society and society will always be a part of education which is why Baldwin states the importance of the responsibility for teachers to change society if they consider themselves as an educated person. To me it is very critical for all of the educators, and especially “those who deal with the minds and hearts of young people” (P.123, L.6-7) to take the greatest care in nourishing out minds and our actions based on the global societal truths. In Baldwin’s speech, he also talks about the treatment that he experienced as a boy living in what he described as “life in the ghetto” (P.125, L.7) and the mistreatment received by whites. The whites were blinded by their own
Montaigne believes that the purpose of education is for children to develop knowledge in the field they are being taught and not to just get their heads filled with different facts that he or she doesn’t understand. I believe that children should be taught to understand and not be educated to memorize things. Montaigne believes that this doesn’t teach children anything because this can easily allow them to forget what they have learned because they are not understanding it. Montaigne states that education should put a child “through its paces, making it taste things, choose them, and discern them by itself” (pg.110). Children should learn through their own pace and we shouldn’t throw things at them that will be difficult for them to acquire.
It does not solve all our educational problems. But not having a curriculum indicates our unwillingness or inability to define what we are trying to accomplish. It provides direction, clarity, and focus around worthy ends, without interfering with teachers’ decisions about how to teach” (Ravitch, 231). Teachers are not getting the creative freedom that is necessary to be a good teacher. Too much emphasis is being placed on testing and accountability thus creating discomfort and stress for educators.
