In the essay I present my understanding of the book and how it relates to life today as well as my personal opinion on the various arguments put forward by the author. The author presents a framework that integrates biological, cognitive and social dimensions of life. The book proposes a systematic approach to life’s critical issues in the new century and is divided into seven chapters which can be grouped into two parts with chapters 1-to-3 being dedicated to presenting the theoretical framework for dealing with the nature of life, the mind and social reality. Chapters 4 through 7 present practical applications to the framework. Throughout the book the author asserts that: * There are hidden connections between various phenomena of processes and patterns of living systems * Humans and their social life evolved from the biological world and system * No individual organism can exist in totalisolation and independence from others * Life is a network. i.e. components of all living systems are interlinked in a network kind of pattern or manner. * There is a close resemblance between metabolic networks in the biological system and communication in the social system for human beings. * Global capitalism and creation of sustainable through ecological literacy are new developments that have a major impact on the well-being and way of life for humanity. * The two developments above are on a collision course as a balance is sought between maximizing wealth and power on the one hand and maximizing sustainability on the other hand. * Politics has a big role to play in paving the way forward
