Herzog and de Meurion / Zaha Hadid Architect

Herzog and de Meurion are born in Switzerland. They were friends since childhood. Their regional and educational backgrounds were exactly the same, so they shared their architectural ideas. Their architectural theory was minimalism. The diversity of minimalism became deeper in architecture, so interpretation of minimalism is really complicated. Because there is no limit to minimalism, this theory can be settled into many ideas. The essential theory of architecture was also Herzog and de Meurion’s. Within minimalism, buildings are fashioned to look and characterize emotion. They thought if architecture wants to be an amalgamation, it has to be unite the artificial and nature first. Phenomenological attitudes were also part of their theory. Phenomenological attitude is composed of the architect and the person who is aware of architecture, or the viewer. The character of their architecture is that uses a simple volume of Cartesian, makeup (a strict distinction with decorations), particular detail, eye-catching materials, urban intelligence and skill, minimal art, and no imitation from others. In their works, structure of buildings and material were based on their experimental mind. Also, surface is the source of every project, and is a really important element of architecture. Herzog and de Meurion also extend the possibility of materials. The building gets expression by using repetition of materials, and it also can make a texture on the surface. They also studied about the material to use it many different ways. They printed the image on the concrete to use the materials more uniquely, and they also used wood board like a steel board. Their view on the materials was really unique. Regarding materials building, the building of Dominus winery in Napa valley (1996) and Prada Tokyo shop and offices(2003) are good examples
