We here at Menifee County High School (MCHS) believe that Columbus Day should be an official federal holiday. This marks the day that our continent was found and if we don't celebrate this day are we better than the rest of the countries of the world? No, no we aren't other countries such as Australia have holidays such as Australia Day.Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. In contemporary Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community. This is something truly spectacular, while we sit around and do nothing to remember Spanish explorers who found us! If it wasn't for them we would be here today! What if they never explored the Atlantic? No country would exist over here (Well they would but you know what I mean.), we'd all still be stuck in tribes with the Cherokee, Aztecs, Incas, etc. The early of explorations of Spanish conquistadors are what made us! In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue. I'm sure we've all heard that almost a million times in our life whether it be a life of 14 years or a life of 100 years we've all heard it but, if Columbus did something so important why don't we celebrate it more?
