Rings of Heroes Benjamin Disraeli once said, “The legacy of heroes is the memory of a great name and the inheritance of a great example”; Disraeli spoke the truth because he understood the importance of the culture that shapes the hero. A hero is defined by their acts of courage, nobility, loyalty, and respect to others as well as themselves. In the legends of King Arthur, Sir Gawain, and the modern film The Amazing Spiderman, the hero reflects the values and traits of his culture. The epic heroes King Arthur and Sir Gawain cannot be fully understood unless one understands that bravery was a major trait that shaped them. It showed power and earned much respect.
One of the most influential people in Rome was Marcus Cicero, a great philopsoper as we say and exam most of his work today we see a story of a honored and respected man as well as loyal, but his loyalty would prove to be his greatest downfall and which would lead to his exicution. (pg. 149) Rome was built of lawyers, judges, and philosophers. (pg. 149) The romans were more practical thinkers and philosophers.
His account of this war was based on his personal experiences and the statements of eyewitnesses, and continues to be recognized as an important work of political theory. There are some who downplay its importance, citing that it does not take into account the ability of man to change and become better human beings. However, history has borne out that human nature is not able to be completely reshaped and therefore, Thucydides reasoning that those with all of the power will continue to promote self-interest and ignore justice can be
After reading various texts, I have become deliberate with different heroes that share similar characteristics which made them well-known. In the period that Homer was well-known for his work, heroes were known to be Homeric Heroes; for example, Odysseus from The Odyssey is an epic hero from the Homeric Period. The heroes known to today’s children are known as modern day heroes; for example, Spiderman is a favorite modern epic hero. Although the stories told, are completely different, these two male heroic models share a few of the same traits, which is known as a distinguishing feature in each character (dictionary.com), that helped them receive their heroic stand such as strength, sharp intellect, and confidence. With the similarities, however, do come the differences; two traits they do not both resemble is thirst for glory and nobility.
In the epic poem the Odyssey, Homer describes Odysseus as an epic hero. Unless Odysseus is able to think of other’s misfortunes with little regard to his own, then he is not considered a hero in my opinion. But, he is also able to show many ways in which he is heroic. He is somewhat of a hero. My opinion is supported by Odysseus’ actions, his qualities, and the decisions he makes.
In lines 23-26, Cassius says, “Ay as Aeneas, our great ancestor, did from the flames of Troy upon his shoulder the old Anchises bear, so from the waves of Tiber did I the tired Caesar.” In this quote you can clearly see that Cassius is bragging about how amazing he is. He is comparing himself to a great legend and trying to make himself seem better than he really is. Making himself sound noble and brave is Cassius’ way of using ethos to his advantage. He is trying to convince Brutus to join him because working with strong men is a huge honor. In the same way, Cassius uses ethos to try to give Caesar the reputation of a fragile ruler who has
A thesis could be made: Men’s brave deeds which should be honored related to their noble virtues and the spirit of courage to fight for their country instead of their fame. Since the Pericles’ Funeral Oration took the history of the Peloponnesian War as its background, the purpose of the speech should be encouraging citizens to focus on the greatness of Athens and benefit the state with their brave deeds both in peace and in war. A democracy was taken by the government that made the administration be controlled in citizens. There was no exclusiveness. The
We understand and have observed their history and significant contributions through books of history and philosophy, perhaps this period was the most interesting time of Greece. Greek men are also known as brave heroes and warriors. However, I found very interesting that Greek “Philotimo” which means “self-pride” is a very important value of their culture which involves generosity, respect to others (especially elders) and this behaviors are carried from generations to generations as one of the most valuable aspects of their culture (Hellenism, 2014). 1. What are some key things you have learned about this culture through reading the scholarly literature?
For decades, scholars have insisted that what most of us know instinctively to be true -- is false. Mocking the belief that individuals such as Julius Caesar, Adolf Hitler or Winston Churchill make history, experts focus on social forces. They explain the past with statistical studies and abstract theories, dismissing stories about individual initiative or heroism. While powerful economic, social and ideological movements dwarfing any individual do shape history, be it the high-tech boom, feminism or the rise of conservatism, we cannot underestimate the way a leader's action and inaction can change the world. Especially when assessing the American presidency and modern America, individual character -- and contingency -- count.
Andrew Kelly Benson English 271 07 March 2013 Truth in Lies Often referred to as ‘‘The Father of History’’ Herodotus is said to be history’s first historian. He was the first historian that “examined sources critically, covered subjects systematically, and explained events in rational rather than mythical terms” (Robertson 62). Many historians have called Herodotus “The Father of Lies” because of his tendencies towards fanciful oral narratives such as those told by Homer in the Illiad and the Odyssey. However Herodotus is regarded by arguing historians, either as history’s first systematic historian, or as that of a simple narrator of fanciful oral narratives, there is no doubt that he laid the foundation for modern day historiography. Herodotus’ life can be traced through his writings.
