After the birth of Hercules, Hera sent a pair of snakes after the twins of Alcmena. Hercules strangled the snakes and was foretold by Tiresias how he would go on to perform great labors to join the Gods on Olympus. Hercucles was taught chariot driving, wrestling, archery, and music by various heroes. However, the then killed his music teacher Linus, or Linos, with his lyre. He was exiled to Mt. Cithaeron for the murder, where he saved the town of Thespiae from a lion and freed the Thebans from paying tribute to the people of Orchomenus. He was rewarded with Megara, the daughter of Creon, as a wife. After Megara had bore several children to Hercules, he killed them all in a fit of madness caused by Hera. He was told by the Pythia to serve Eurystheus, king Tiryns, for twelve years, and perform the labors he would impose. First, the Nemean Lion. Hercules killed the Nemean lion with a club, skinning it by using the animals own claws. Second, the Lernanean Hydra. A nine-headed serpent, which lived in the marshes of Lerna, grew back two heads in the place of each one Hercules clubbed. In addition to this, Hera had sent a crab to make the trial more difficult. Hercules was soon helped by his nephew Iolaos, and, after the battle, dipped his arrows in the Hydra's poison. The crab became the constellation Cancer. Third was the Cerynean Hind. A hind with golden horns was pursued by Hercules for a year, it was captured and carried, alive, back to Eurystheus, who released it. Fourth, the Erymanthian Boar. Hercules brought Eurystheus the monstrous boar that had lived on Mt. Erymanthos. Fifth, the Augean Stables. Hercules was appointed to clean the stables of Augeas, who kept vast herds of cattle. He diverted the rivers so that they would flow through the stables, with Athena's help. Sixth, the Symphalian Birds were shot by Hercules. Seventh, the Cretan Bull was caught by
