Herbal and Nutritional Supplement Therapy Interview on Ginkgo Herbal Therapy M. T. an elderly woman is 75 years old and is using Ginkgo Herbal Therapy for memory enhancement. She has been using the herb for 10 years. M. T. believes that this herb has improved her memory also; Ginkgo has reduced her arthritis pain in her back and legs. M. T. has a medical history of Hypertension, Diabetes type 2, Arthritis, and Bronchitis. Her medications are lisinopril, glyburide, and soma and albuterol inhaler. Although M. T. has other medical problems she believes that Ginkgo has improved her memory, and helps her arthritis discomforts. She takes the Ginkgo pill everyday along with her other medications. M. T. feels this is a wonderful herb and its effectiveness on her body has helped her tremendously. Ginkgo Herbal Therapy Herbal/Nutritional Supplement Therapy Ginkgo is an herb and their leaves are usually used to make extracts that are used as medicine. (MedlinePlus, 2013). Ginkgo also known as Ginkgo Biloba is a tree that is found in Southeast Asia. These trees are more than a thousand years old. (O'Mathuna, & Larimore, 2007). The Ginkgo leaves are dried using alcohol and made into capsules (O'Mathuna, & Larimore, 2007). According to O'Mathuna, & Larimore, 2007 claims that Ginkgo centers on the improvements in mental capacity. This herb is recommended for general memory loss related to aging, advancing Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive problems occurring after a stroke or with depression. It has also been used for several types of dementias, including vascular dementia. (O'Mathuna, & Larimore, 2007). Ginkgo Boloba contains a variety of antioxidants that prevent oxidation reaction known to play a role in diseases of brain tissue. (O'Mathuna, & Larimore, 2007).
