Hephaestus Hephaestus is the son of Zeus and Hera. Sometimes it is said that Hera alone produced him and that he has no father. He is the only god to be physically ugly. He is also lame. Accounts as to how he became lame vary. Some say that Hera, upset by having an ugly child, flung him from Mount Olympus into the sea, breaking his legs. Others that he took Hera’s side in an argument with Zeus and Zeus flung him off Mount Olympus. He is the god of fire and forge. He is the smith and armorer of the gods. He uses a volcano as his forge. He is the patron god of both smiths and weavers. He is kind and peace loving. His wife is Aphrodite. Sometimes his wife is identified as Agalia. Hephaestus’s Family Tree Parents: Hephaestus was a son of Zeus, the King of the Gods, and Hera, the goddess of marriage, although it was considered by some that he was conceived prenuptially. Siblings: Eilithyia, the goddess of childbirth, Hebe, the goddess of youth and Ares, the Olympian god of War. Wife: Aphrodite, the goddess of love. Personal Characteristics Hephaestus married Aphrodite, but it was not an ordinary arrangement. Hephaestus was not physically attractive and wanted a marriage. He was still mad because he was not accepted and decided to seek revenge. It is said that he built a throne for his mother Hera, and she sat down on the throne and eventually realized she was stuck. Hephaestus captured his mother using the chair and would not let her go. Even though Dionysus got Hephaestus drunk, Hephaestus would not let Hera go until he got his way by marrying Athena or Aphrodite. He ended up married to Aphrodite and was not happy.
