January 14, 2011 Photosynthesis is the conversion of the energy of sunlight into chemical energy by living organisms. A pigment is any substance that absorbs light. Chlorophyll captures sunlight and is the green pigment common to all. The thylakoid is the structural unit of photosynthesis. The thylakoids are stacked like pancakes in stacks known as grana. The grana are a series of stacked up thylakoid pancakes containing chlorophyll. Next comes the stroma. The Stroma is the area in between grana. The stroma is also located inside the chloroplast. The stroma also contains all the enzymes. The chloroplast has both an inner membrane and outer membrane. The inner membrane is on the inside of the cell, and the outer membrane is on the outside of the cell. Lumen can also be the inside space of a cellular structure. It is also contained in the chloroplast. Photosynthesis has three ingredients. These three ingredients are: light, water, and carbon dioxide. Then oxygen goes in and the product is then glucose to the Light reaction. Then in the Dark reaction it is carbon dioxide. When you state or write out the chemical equation for glucose it should look like this: C6H12O6. Like I said the major pigment is Chlorophyll and it captures sunlight. This is also a green pigment. Then, accessory pigments absorb energy that chlorophyll does not absorb. Two of these accessory pigments are xanthophylls and carotenoids. Both of these pigments capture light. Xanthophylls and carotenoids capture almost every color except the color green. Now, why do leaves fall of the trees in the fall? This is because leaves carry out photosynthesis to produce energy or food. Without sunlight photosynthesis cannot take place. Chlorophyll is the main substance that helps with photosynthesis in plants. It’s a huge process that takes place when leaves fall off the trees in
