Hector Berlioz: A Brief Biography I am Hector Berlioz and I was born on December 11, 1803, in La Côte Saint-André, France, just southeast of Lyon, France. I had five siblings, but only two sisters lived to adulthood. At age thirteen, I produced my first compositions, including a pot-pourri for six instruments. A year later, I conducted my first orchestral concert, which turned out to be the turning point in my musical career. I composed many pieces, including La Damnation de Faust, Les Ballet des ombres, Cleopatre, Neuf melodies irlandaises, and most notably, Symphonie fantastique, Symphonie funèbre et triomphale and the Roman Carnival scene of Benvenuto Cellini. At age 27, my most popular music, Symphonie fantastique, was premiered for the first time in Paris at the Conservatory. Turns out that Chopin and Liszt were in the audience. Unfortunately, I was not allowed to conduct my own music until I turned thirty-three but at least my music was already consistently being performed in very prestigious venues. After that, my rendition of Romeo and Juliet was also played there and conducted by me. I
