Assignment 3: Health Care Costs Health Services Organization (HSA 500) May 19, 2013 Introduction The rate of growth in health care spending in the United States has outpaced the growth rate in the Gross domestic product (GDP), inflation, and population for many years. The GDP is one of the primary indicators used to gauge the health of a country's economy and it represents the total dollar value of all goods and services produced over a specific period of time. In previous years, state and federal governments’ involvement in either the financing or the direct provision of care was very minimal. Health care of itself was seen as a personal, family and locality issue and state and government intervention was non-existent. In recent years, considerable attention has now focused on combined health care spending increases, and emphasis has been given to identifying and examining the factors that have contributed to spending growth, and proposing policy solutions to reduce spending growth. Factors that contribute to increased cost in health care include; new technologies, aging of the population and increase in consumer demand. Impact of Health Care legislation The purpose of the Affordable Health Care for America Act -H.R.3962 is to provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans and reduce the growth in health care spending, and for other purposes (America Word Press, n.d.) The areas affected by the legislation are Medicare and Medicaid and coverage expansion for the general public. The administration is trying to strengthen Medicare and Medicaid by covering the uninsured. Millions of Americans who are elderly or disabled are currently covered and its policies are followed by many private insurance companies when they set up their internal systems.
