A healthy community is one where people have good physical and emotional health. I think this is more than just the absence of illness. A healthy community promotes well-being and offers a high quality of life. Resources in the area are used to stay active and information can be obtained to eat healthy. In my area there are programs like the YMCA which I go to and WIC. The YMCA is a nonprofit organization the works everyday with their neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. There is a daycare in the facility so mothers can bring their children so they can work out. There is a wide range of ages that go to the Y. Teens after school and older adults that come in for the water exercise programs. Their mission is to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all, our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good. (http://www.ymca.net/about-us?) WIC stands for women, infants and children and is a federal assistance program. The program is for low-income pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and infants and children under the age of five. WIC offers health counseling, nutritious foods, and breastfeeding support to help families stay healthy. (http://www.nutrition.gov/food-assistance-programs/wic-women-infants-and-children) Healthy communities have these programs for individuals to utilize and to be considered a healthy they should use them often. If a community does not have these programs and are in need they can bring it up to area offices to see if you could start one in their community. If it was in my community I would personal try to get these thing implemented because staying active is a huge part of being healthy.
