MARTINET SOCIETY AND FOUNDATION ESSAY Today, working men and women have been forced to sacrifice well-deserved wage increases in exchange for the constantly rising cost of health care. The skyrocketing costs of drugs and millions of Americans who don’t have any health care who suffer with treatable illnesses. Should the government pay for health care? What are the obstacles to creating a Universal Healthcare System in America? Is such a system necessary? Does such a system undermine the “American Dream”? This is a subject that is affecting every family today. The Healthcare System in America has many American families wondering what will be the final outcome doing this health care debate. The reality many Americans are facing is the need for affordable health care, and if the government should be responsible for paying for the health care of many American families. Louisiana has implemented a Medicaid program called LaChip, which offers low cost or no cost health care plans for uninsured Louisiana children up to age 19. Eligibility is based on family size and income. This is only one program I am familiar with, but many of the programs should be re-evaluated to determine if they are truly meeting the needs of the community or self-serving not designed to operate in the capacity organized, and neglecting to meet the need it was intended. President Barack Obama made several campaign promises during his run for the presidency. The President wants legislation to extend health care coverage to millions of uninsured Americans, expand pharmaceutical benefits for the elderly and give lower-income families subsidies to help them afford coverage as well as small businesses. In addition, he has called on Congress to ban insurance industry practices such as denial of coverage because of pre-existing conditions. I am all for revamping the health care industry
