“Ensuring Eye Health Services through strengthening Community Health System: A Case Study of Durbachati Panchayat[i] of Sunderban, North 24Pragana, West Bengal” Sudipta Mohanty, Programme Manager, India Abstract: Access to health care in the remote island of Sunderban was a myth until the time “Sunderban Social Development Center” (SSDC); a local NGO started its intervention here to provide eye care services. Though the services were initially designed to cater rehabilitation services to the blind people , which had created a huge demand by the community for cataract surgeries, it has now leveraged to address more holistic issues related to eye health and more so towards addressing issues of ocular morbidity. Looking from the lens of health system building blocks, it poses a perfect example where “health workforce” in terms of members of the village health committee, “health financing” in terms of a village health fund and “leadership & governance” of these community based organizations has helped establishing a proper service delivery mechanism and in the long run ensuring enhanced quality of eye health services. The paper provides an insight in to the village health system in Sunderban. Background: West Bengal lies in the eastern part of India. It is the twelfth largest state in terms of geographic size and ranks fourth in terms of population (8% of India’s total population). The region called Sunderbans is the deltoid formed by the tributaries of river Ganges, as it tends to meet the Bay of Bengal. The delta is considered to be largest of its kind in the world. The whole area is criss-crossed by rivers and stretches for about 100 kms. It consists of 102 islands spread over the North 24 Parganas and South 24 Parganas districts of West Bengal.
