Health Promotion in Nursing Practice Kimberly Smith Grand Canyon University NRS-429V June 22, 2014 The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health promotion as, “the process of enabling people to increase control over and to improve their health.” (WHO, 2014) Health is not just the absence of any signs and symptoms of disease, it is considered to be maintenance of a total state of wellness at a physical, mental and social level. Health promotion and prevention enables patients to make healthy decisions and lifestyle changes through education and awareness. Improving health and the quality of life, is the primary goal of health promotion and prevention. There are three levels involved in the health promotion and prevention process of care. They are primary, secondary and tertiary levels of care.
I believe that providing the best possible care for each patient should be the primary concern of nursing. In doing so, the environment is crucial in the meeting the needs of the patient. Central concepts of nursing are “person, environment, health, and nursing” ( Masters, 2014, p.48).Careful consideration must be given in educating the patient about the illness. In early years, the responsibility fell upon the physician. In recent years, the responsibility has been transferred to the nurse to manage the patient’s environment in order to promote the patient’s recovery.
We also helped nurses in each floor if they had any questions about how to handle a patient with pressure ulcers. We also did many in services with new products to treat and prevent pressure ulcers. We monitored the pressure ulcers if they were community, hospital, or unit acquired and then, the manager of the Wound Care Program had to send all this information quarterly to the NDNQI, and if we found many patients with newly hospital acquired pressure ulcers the Wound Care Program manager and her team had to implement a plan with new ideas to lower the pressure ulcers in the floors, and to educate the nurses and techs in order to be more successful in prevention of pressure ulcers because the treatment can be
All over the world there are doctors and nurses. Did you know that there are many types of nurses? I’m going to tell you about Licensed Practical Nurses. They are the people who help elderly people with their daily lives. They are the people who bring you into the exam room when you visit your doctor, or maybe they help the mother who is in labor.
Patients deserve a well educated nurse. It is very important for a nurse to educate their patients upon discharge, treatment options, diet, hospital stay and medications. If a patient is well educated and informed by a nurse with a BSN degree, they will make a better health choice and prevent them from being readmitted into
One of those organizations is the Joint Commission and another one of them is the National Committee of Quality Assurance (NCQA). These organizations are responsible for developing and improving the quality of care. The Joint Commission is responsible for trying to continually improve the health care of the public they do this by working with stakeholders and evaluating different health care organizations while encouraging them to go above and beyond in providing safe and effective care at the highest quality and value (Spath, 2014). The NCQA is responsible for developing standards that will continue to improve the quality of health care. If an organization is interested in acquiring the seal of the NCQA they must first be able to pass a rigorous and comprehensive review as well as report annually on the continued performance of the organization (About NCQA, 2014).
Quality Health Care in a Modern World Stephanie Jordan HCA 304 Instructor: Kori Novak October 15, 2011 Quality health care in today’s world consists of more than just a doctor or a nurse providing care to a patient; it is the combination of technology, management, training and the human aspect. The legal issues of providing the best health care are important because they involve not only protecting the patient but insuring that processes are put into place to change problem issues into stronger policies to protect the patient. Ethical issues come into play when a patient’s rights are violated or services are refused because of ability to pay. How do we build a strong community of health care? The first step is the role of the health
Therefore, doctors, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, and the individual themselves are in fact what makes up the the health care industry that needs to reduce the risks from using medicines and to get the most benefit out of them. In order to make medicine use safer, one must speak up about their past and present because the more information a health care organization knows about them, the better they can plan the care that’s right for them. Another important factor that FDA effects in the health care industry is finding the correct facts. Before the health care organization can decide on a prescription or OTC medicine, one must know understand as much about it as possible. The most important factors to identify are brand and generic names, active ingredients, inactive ingredients, uses, warnings, possible interactions, side effects, possible tolerance, dependence, or addiction, overdose, directions, storage instructions, and expiration
Health Promotion in Nursing Practice Health promotion education practiced in the communities can positively affect the communities’ health and nurses contribute to this result. “The International Council of Nurses (ICN) (2009) reported that health-promoting actions performed by nurses working in diverse settings provide ideal opportunities for health promotion with a goal of creating healthy homes, schools, cities and workplaces. Individually and through national associations, nurses, along with other healthcare providers, can be effective in paving the road for good health through health promotion.” (Jadelhack, 2012) Nurses’ can educate their patients on the important lifestyle changes that include smoking cessation, implementing an exercise regimen, vaccinations, dietary changes, etc all of which can contribute to the prevention of health problems such as obesity, hypertension, coronary artery disease, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and other chronic diseases. The General Nursing Directorate (GND) addressed the following goals for primary health care centers on behalf of the nursing profession 1.
Assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating a Health Promotion activity Introduction: This essay will give a systematic account of a Health Promotion (HP) activity, which was focused on the awareness of stress and its prevention. It will analyse the assessment of the health need and how the activity was planned, implemented and then evaluated to determine if the anticipated outcome was achieved. The World Health Organization (WHO, 1948) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. In 1986, it added that health is a resource for everyday life, and not the objective of living, a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities (WHO, 1986). However, Seedhouse (1986) suggested that health can best be described as providing the foundation by which human achievement can be attained; it is an instrument, agency, method, or course of action employed to attain some object or bring about some benefiting results, rather than a fixed condition or status, to which someone might aspire so that, with the appropriate resources, people are more easily enabled to achieve their potential.
