INTERMEDIATE APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE UNIT 1 Principles for implementing Duty of Care in Health, Social Care or Children’s and Young Peoples setting Learning outcome 1 – Understand how duty of care contributes to safe practice. Define the term ‘duty of care’ Duty of care is a general legal duty that all individuals and organisations are bound by. It is a duty to care for those around you by not causing harm or injury by being careless in your behaviour and actions. Describe how the duty of care affects own work role Duty of care affects my work role because I support people with learning disabilities who don’t always believe that they are making the wrong decisions and I need to recognise risks and hazards that they may not recognise for themselves. For example emptying the kettle after it is boiled so there is no hot for the service user to scold themselves with. Learning outcome 2 – Understand support available for addressing dilemmas that may rise about duty of care Describe dilemmas that may arise between the duty of care an individual’s rights Dilemmas that may arise could be when a supported person wants to choose the sort of care they receive by asking to be lifted manually when support staff are only willing to lift using the hoist to protect themselves.
