B1 (a) A description of the Legislation and codes of practice relating to diversity, equality, inclusion and discrimination. Diversity means difference. When it is used with equality, it is about recognising individual as well as group differences, treating people as individuals and placing positive value on diversity. Diversity is about acknowledging your prejudices, allowing people to be different and respecting these differences. It is also about challenging others if necessary and speaking up individuals you support when they cannot speak for themselves. Equality is about everybody being equal to one another, but not necessarily treating them all the same. Because everyone`s needs are different you as a support worker have to look at the individual needs, and assess what you can do to improve their quality of life, whilst keeping them safe and still promoting independence . Inclusion is about involving everyone in the society, making sure all have opportunities to work or take part in social activities even though they may have a disability stopping someone from their right to speak up and voice themselves properly or not. E.g. mental health problems. Discrimination: Discrimination is a preconceived attitude towards members of a particular group formed only upon the basis of their membership of that group that leads to less favourable or bad treatment of that person. The attitude is often resistance to change even in the light of new information. Nonetheless it’s a very cruel way to get to somebody. Also this leads to more serious matters such as a major loss of self esteem and this can reduce their ability to develop and maintain a sense of identity. The Equality Act is a legislation that is in place to ensure that people are giving equal rights and opportunities regardless of their age, gender, disability, race, religion or belief and sexual
