A Guide to Health and Safety The main piece of Legislation that applies to our work setting ‘ The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA). It is the law and the following regulations are implemented under it amongst others. These regulations relate to general health and safety and moving amend handling. * Health and safety (first aid) regulation 1981 including amendment in 2009 * Lifting operations and lifting equipment regulations 1998 (LOLER) * Control of substances hazardous to health 1999 (COSHH) * Reporting of injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences regulations 1995 (RIDDOR) * Provision and use of work equipment regulations 1998 (PUWER) * Personal protective equipment 1992 You as a support/care worker need to know and be familiar with the relevant legislation in order to create a safe and secure working environment. Other duties of the support worker include; * Take care of own health and safety as well as others * Co-operate with employer by following policies and procedures * Use PPE as necessary (personal protective equipment) * Adhere to achieve training and follow instruction * Not to misuse or tamper with anything provided for health and safety welfare. Your employer should; * Provide a safe and risk free environment * Provide equipment * Deal with hazardous substances safely * Provide information, instruction, training and supervision when necessary. * Ensure equipments are safe to use and safe system of work are set and followed. The individuals that you support should; * Follow health and safety advice given to them. * Co-operate with you to use appropriate equipment safely. * Take reasonable care for own health and safety.
