The number of chromosomes in each sperm produced is half the normal number 23 instead of 46. They take a month or so to travel from a testicle through a long tube. Each sperm counts human DNA but only one complete a set of chromosomes. One day before conception the woman ovulates and produces one mature ovum.

This class of drugs, which includes Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil — the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors — increases levels of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain. The authors report that some exposed infants experience frequent crying, irritability, sleep disturbances and seizures, but the problem usually resolves itself within two weeks. The authors also note that the evidence does not suggest long-term harm from maternal use of antidepressants during pregnancy. They write: Several recent reviews have not identified adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes among infants born to women treated with SSRI’s during pregnancy. SSRI treatment should be continued at the lowest effective dose because withdrawal of medication may have harmful effects on the mother infant [bond].
Lifespan Development 20th March 2010 Essay: Using key research studies, critically evaluate theories of attachment. Throughout the following essay i will be explaining different theories of attachment; I will be critically evaluating key research studies, including the work of John Bowlby, Schaffer and Emerson and Mary Ainsworth. Attachment describes a strong, emotional bond that endures overtime between an infant and their caregiver. Many researchers believe that attachment develops through a series of stages. Rudolfe Schaffer and Peggy Emerson (1964) studied sixty babies at monthly intervals for the first eighteen months of life; and a regular pattern was identified in the development of attachment (Hardy, S. 1995).
CONCEPTION PHYSICAL Conception is the beginning of human development and happens when the sperm meets an egg. In the first month, the first two weeks will be the embryo attaching itself to the uterine wall. After 25 days, the baby’s body will start to develop (only the head, followed by the trunk and arm buds). The heart will also start beating. By 30 days, the baby will be a quarter of an inch long.
PURPOSE: To determine the effect of transition to digital screening mammography on clinical outcome measures, including recall rate, cancer detection rate, and positive predictive value (PPV). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional review board approval and the need for informed consent were waived for this HIPAA-complaint study. Practice audit data were obtained for three breast imaging radiologists from 2004 to 2009. These data were sorted by time period into the following groups: baseline (2004-2005), digital year 1 (2007), digital year 2 (2008), and digital year 3 (2009). The χ(2) and Fisher exact tests were used to assess differences in proportions among and between years.
An abortion can happen spontaneously due to complications during the pregnancy or can be induced. An abortion that is induced to help save the life of the women is called a therapeutic abortion; whereas an abortion induced for any other reason is called an elective abortion. More than a third of the average two hundred and five million pregnancies each year (worldwide) are not planned for, and twenty percent of them usually end in induced abortion. An abortion is referred to as a therapeutic abortion when it is done to: (1) save the life of the pregnant woman; (2) preserve the woman’s mental health; (3) terminate a pregnancy that would result in a baby born with a fatal disorder; or (4) reduce the number of fetuses to reduce health risks usually associated with multiple pregnancy. An abortion is called an elective abortion when it is done at the request of the woman, for reasons other than maternal or fetal health.
“A 2012 study in Obstetrics & Gynecolog yfound a woman's risk of dying from having an abortion is 0.6 in 100,000, while the risk of dying from giving birth is around 14 times higher (8.8 in 100,000).” (E.G. Raymond and D.A. Grimes, 2012) The fact that abortion is safe plays a large role in why so many people now believe that it should be legal and why it has become legal in so many places over the last 50 years. A recent study shows that women who are denied abortion are often are more likely to be become unemployed, to receive welfare, be below the poverty line and become victims of domestic violence. The study focused on women who were turned away from abortion because their baby was too far along and from the results they discovered that “76% of the "turnaways" ended up on unemployment benefits, compared with 44% of the women who had abortions.” These statistics oppose the question of if this is the best situation for the mother and the child.
