HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. The disease is passed from one person to another through body fluids, such as blood, and semen. HIV can be spread by having unprotected sex with an infected person. It can also be contracting through intravenous drug use by sharing dirty needles. Health care workers, and patient receiving care also can contract HIV by a mistake, such as an accidentally needle stick, or being in contact with contaminated items within the health care facility if there is not any policies, guidelines or safety rules to abide by.
