Legal, Safety, and Regulatory Requirement that Effects Human Resources HCS 341 University of Phoenix Legal, Safety, and Regulatory Requirement that Effects Human Resources The purpose of safety changes (Gomez-Mejia, 2010) that have taken place within the business world was due to the many employee injuries or illness, according to the Bureau of Labor statistics. The safety requirements needed for the protection of employees in the business world came about in 1970 when the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) passed. Just before the OSHA, the government passed a Coal Mine Health and Safety Act to help regulate the safety and health of coal miners, and this was due to a loss of coal miners lives in a mine explosion in 1969. Organizations providing safety for their employees will as well, reduce the costs to a company's most important assets, their employees. Organizations (Gomez-Mejia, 2010) can achieve safety through a variety of ways such as organizational policies and procedures, techniques used for hazard control, inspections, and more. Human resources management (HRM) has put into operation HR policies that comply with all state and federal regulations and policies, as well as provides proficient protection for all employee's health and safety. The state regulations and policies fall under the workers compensation laws, and the federal regulations and policies falls under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA). Workers compensation laws provide all employees with medical coverage, and wage loss if an employee should be injured on the job, or become ill due to the job. Workers compensation insurance is paid by the employer, and it is up to the HR department set policies that prevent job injuries for the reason that each employee who becomes injured on the job causes the workers compensation insurance costs the employer in higher premium payments. What OSHA does is it apparatus policies and standards for safety within the business world. OSHA encourages organizations to provide protections and safety for their employees, and they are able to do this by inspecting organizations work areas, and talk to employees, give organizations citations and fines for violations of safety protocol. A working environment (Gomez-Mejia, 2010) that is considered safe must be formed and produced within the workplace and this is accomplished by having safety programs set-up in the organization. Organization managers and supervisors should not only follow the safety procedures, but also be able to demonstrate the safety procedures, and keep employees aware of organization safety protocol by arranging safety meetings, and safety training. HRM should also give out rewards to departments that follow safety protocol, and have no employee injuries within a certain time-period. If an injuries
