Breast Cancer You never thought this would happen to you! This is exactly what I said, after finding out I had breast cancer. I remember it like it was yesterday. Breast cancer as a purely physical problem. Every year in this country, 185,000 women hear words no woman wants to hear: "You have breast cancer. (Breast Cancer, 2013) Most of them do not have any symptoms; it is purely from getting the mammogram tests. What is breast cancer? Most people do not know what exactly breast cancer is. Breast cancer is a bad cell. It occurs when a result of mutations or abnormal changes, in the genes responsible for regulating the growth of cells and keeping them healthy. (Breastcancer.org, 2013) The term “breast cancer” refers to a malignant tumor that has developed from cells in the breast. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. (Breastcancer.org, 2013) When breast cancer develops, it can then move to other areas such as under the arm lymph nodes, from there it can spread to other parts of the body. There are different stages of breast cancer from zero to four. A quick definition of them would be zero is early detection and four being terminal. Some studies suggest that psychological interventions may actually help keep women alive. In a 2009 study published in Cancer, for example, researchers tracking women with breast cancer found that after an average of eleven years those who had participated in group therapy were 45 percent less likely to have had their cancer return and 56 percent less likely to have died of the disease.
