Hazing is Harmful Hazing has been a problem in not only fraternities and sororities but student organizations, sports teams at both the high school and collegiate level and even the military. This has been happening for a number of years. Hazing is the task of being forced to perform strenuous, humiliating, or dangerous tasks to be accepted to a certain organization. In some cases hazing can harm the person mentally and physically. Hazing usually happens because an individual or group feels the need to have power or control over a younger peer. Hazing comes in three different types of categories, subtle hazing, harassment hazing and violent hazing. Subtle hazing is the behavior of showing a power imbalance between new or rookie members and other veteran members of some type of organization. Some examples of this are deception, socially isolating new members from the rest of the group and making new members refer to past members as a name that clearly states they are better than you such as master. This is what happens in most sports teams and student organizations. For example Dez Bryant, a professional football player, was told to carry a veterans pads after practice and he refused. The next day the team completely filled his Cadillac with popcorn and made him carry all the wide receivers pads before and after practice, according to the bleacher report these tasks happen in most professional teams. But this is just a simple, harmless type of hazing. When you hear the word hazing, a fraternity or sorority comes to mind. In most cases, these are the places hazing occurs most often. The most common form of hazing involves alcohol abuse. 82% of deaths from hazing involve alcohol, according to a hazing expert Hank Nuwer. In sports teams and student organizations hazing is not so severe It is usually something small like doing what the veterans or elders say, like
