I feel that social networking give people permission to stalk others. There have been multiple occurrences that people have “liked” pictures that I have posted… four years ago! This lets me know that they are creeping through my profile and that just freaks me out! Sure, one solution would be to delete my account, but I keep it because it is the most convenient way to communicate with my relatives. I was hesitant to get it because I feel that whenever I did set up a social networking account a new networking site was created making the old one obsolete.

Our culture is changing; every day more people utilize cybernetic ways to communicate which reduces the quality of our interaction. On her essay, “Sex, Lies and Conversation”, Deborah Tannen points out that intimacy is the base of relationships, but how can intimacy exist if our communication levels these days do not even involve having a face to face conversation. Since the Internet and computers became more affordable, more people are becoming part of the cybernetic world. According to Wikipedia, there are over 500 million users on the most popular social networking websites, more than half of them are under 25. This means that most of the young members of our society are growing accustomed to a different kind of communication, perhaps one of less quality.

These pages did not just support these events going on in America, but also in other countries. “Liking isn’t helping” is the headline of an ad campaign by Publicis Singapore created for Crisis Relief Singapore, a Christian disaster relief organization run by volunteers ("Powerful Ad Campaign Shows That Facebook Likes Don't Help"). The image used is a real image used to represent one of the Singapore catastrophes with thumbs-up mimicking the Facebook “Like” button. In an average day, Facebook pages get over fifty-million likes and with that being said, the message this ad is trying to get across is the representation of the Facebook like button ("25 Amazing Facts About Facebook - Search Engine Journal”). Despite the fact that viewers can only see one out of the thousands of kids being affected by this catastrophe, the overall ad is effective in that the people can see how liking a picture is not helping the people going through all of this.
Franzen then goes on to write about how technology has made living much more “likeable”, it is much easier to like something in cyberspace than in real life. He appeals to his readers through pathos. He tries to speak to our feelings by saying “We can handle being disliked now and then, because there is such an infinitely big pool of potential “likers”. But to expose your whole self, not just the likable surface, and to have it rejected, can be catastrophically painful.” He claims people are having a relationship to their cell phone and other technological devices. Throughout the entire essay Franzen uses arguments saying we do not appreciate the physical world enough.
I chose this article because I have young children. They always want to play my iPhone and iPad. My son always think and talk about the iPad games after he had played with the iPad three days and less than two hours per day. As I searched parents around me, I found 100% of the parents let their children play with their iPhones and iPads. Some of them give the iPhones or iPads to make their children silent and to have a peaceful time after their have worked all day.
