Wizards and Wands vs. Vampires and Werewolves In today’s world, there are two big franchises that come to mind when the average young adult is thinking: Harry Potter and Twilight. So, what makes this franchise, Harry Potter, such a relatable topic? Why are so many teens and young adults so drawn to Harry Potter? While the Twilight franchise is also a world wide success, what lures such a wider audience to Harry Potter? Stephen King once said, “Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.” (Bits of Wisdom). The Harry Potter franchise has the ability to reach a larger audience and is more culturally significant because, unlike the Twilight franchise, it does not alienate male fans due to its plot scheme, the characters and character point of view, and its book to movie differences. In Harry Potter, there are so many different schemes and actions going on in the plot, while in Twilight, the main plot is just Bella being with Edward forever. First off, in the wizarding world, Harry is a living legend. His own parents were killed by Lord Voldemort, a power-obsessed dark wizard, who also attempted to kill Harry, but he instead lives on as a legend. In Twilight, there are no major heroes like Harry, because Twilight is merely based around love and foreverness. Throughout the series, Harry faces many life-threatening and difficult challenges. In the Harry Potter franchise, Harry starts out by being introduced to the wizard world. This is where his adventures begin. He goes through things like fighting off dementors, the Triwizard Tournament, finding and destroying horcruxes, and finally defeating Lord Voldemort.
