Hardest Lesson I Ever Learned

Written By: April Allen Have you ever heard the expression “If it’s too good to be true, then it probably is”? Well I can tell you first hand that it is a very true statement. It simply means if something seems to be too good to be true, then you need to look closer and find out what the catch is. More than likely you want like the catch or its consequences! I learned this lesson the hardest way possible, and I hope that I can be an example to you so that you don’t make the same mistake I did. Believe me, it’s not a mistake that you want to make twice! I will begin by telling you that I have a very close and loving family. We have never had a lot of money, but we have never went without life’s necessities. We just never had money in a bank account or money in our pockets to spend freely. So when I went to the Post office one morning and received an envelope that contained a check for $1396.00 dollars, you can imagine my surprise and excitement! I thought I had hit the jackpot! As I’m sure you would do, I was already thinking of ways to spend the money before I ever even knew what the check was for. I soon came back down to reality and read the only paper that came with the check. It didn’t really make a whole lot of sense, it just said that I had been chosen to be a mystery shopper and for my observation of a Walmart worker and a western union worker, I would get paid with the check. I simply just had to send some of the money and my reports back to the given address in the letter. Now it did seem a little weird to me. Why would they need me to cash the check and then send them some money back? Why didn’t they just send the money that I was supposed to be paid? My gut told me not to cash it and just throw it away, but not having a dime in my pocket overruled any common sense I had. So I decided to try to cash the check. It was the worst decision I ever made.
