Most Americans do not become killers to make it up the ladder or to hold on to what hey have, but the traditional restraints on naked self-aggrandizement seem weaker-and the insatiability greater” (Derber, p. 14). In my head while reading this, I was like “Oh!!! Now it really does make sense! And it’s true.” I mean, who wouldn’t want to do that? Take the easier route to get more money.
He described desire as blind ignorance, and bliss and insight which is true since most of what people desire at least here in America, are money and possessions which of course are both temporary. Neither lasts forever so it is ignorant to allow them to define
The existing economic effects presented by the rise in demand for Medicare occurred because of the rise in the number of aged individuals. For elderly to be accommodated by the effects of Medicare as per current crisis, particular individuals or sectors of the economy will need to be sacrificed and left to suffer the negative effects related to the increase in demand for
Feeling helpless due to the economy they become addicted to claiming help from other sources other than themselves because it just seems easier. Thomas argues,” Anyone who thinks dysfunctional government is going to help their dreams is putting their faith in the wrong place.” In other words, the government cannot help everyone. Instead we should but putting our faith into ourselves. We are what makes America today, and if we don’t like it, then maybe we should take action and change it. If we were to start by supporting small business, we would be creating more employment, and keeping money in the community.
Give everyone with their hand out a piece of bread. Now that they have this piece of bread, they’ll obviously get a job and better our economy. That doesn’t make much sense, and yet a certain political party in America (let it be known that this is just a portion of the party, not everyone) seems to think that this is a novel idea because everyone deserves “opportunity.” Giving people money is not rewarding them with opportunity. It’s much like a rocking chair: it gives them something to do but in the end they are still where they were. The systems in this country like Welfare were intended to be temporary, or to help those who are unable to take care of themselves.
They don’t live lavish lifestyles. They are willingly to pay for quality items but certainly not as an image booster. Most people that live next door to these types of millionaires are oblivious to that fact. These types of millionaires may very well be perceived as boring and as not having a very happy life or lifestyle. Usually this is not the case though and these millionaires are indeed very happy.
The sad fact is that the United States system of funding presidential campaigns remains elitist and undemocratic. A public funding system that would make the process more equitable does exist, but is largely unused because it is badly underfunded. In the absence of public funds that would allow them to be competitive, political office seekers depend upon a relative handful of individuals whose large contributions make up the bulk of the money they raise. Special interests by spreading their wealth to all contestants are able to reduce the likelihood that they will be held accountable for their misdeeds. In conclusion, there are various advantages and disadvantages presented on whether campaign financing will ultimatelly benefit.
Good VS. Evil “Money doesn’t buy happiness.” A saying many non-wealthy human beings say just to make them feel better about their self-esteem. But it seems odd that in this book “The Great Gatsby” money evolves around love. The two main characters Gatsby and Tom, theyre love Daisy is only interested in them because of theyre wealth. So this quote has no meaning because money did buy them happiness or at least for Tom it did.
Instituting a Buy Nothing holiday has some good as well as bad effects, although the harm greatly outweighs the benefits. A Buy Nothing Day is of use socially in a time where the focus should be about spending time with loved ones and worshiping in that way one sees fit although, when such a day causes a huge lag in improving the economy the social implications are worthless. Even if all the money that was spent buying non-necessities were donated to charities, there is no guarantee that all the money donated would reach those in need. In short, A Buy Nothing Day although virtuous in thought is horrible in reality as it allows for the breakdown of an already fragile
Sociologists do strive to achieve “comparable results”. However, this is an unfair statement. People often believe that we are in the land of opportunity [which is true], but that is only for some, making situations uncomparale. When “white households will accumulate wealth faster” (Shapiro, 179) the American Dream is not real. Everyone can’t achieve their dreams on hope and effort.
