Handball is a very exciting game that I have learned to love over the last two weeks in gym. Handball is team sport where there is usually six members plus a goalie on a team. The actual "field" that handball is played on is set up like a normal indoor soccer field. The court is 130 by 66 ft. The object of the game is to get your ball into your opponents goal. The rules of handball are surprisingly very easy and there is only a select few. First, after receiving the ball you have to give your ball to another player after three seconds. During the three seconds that you are actually playing the ball you can either dribble, pass, or shoot. Another rule is that after receiving the ball you can have three steps without passing, dribbling or shooting. After this you need to get rid of the ball or it could be turned over to the other team. The last rule is that you are not allowed to step into the goal keeper's semi-circle but goal keepers are allowed out of this line. A standard match of handball can be played in two periods consisting of thirty minutes each, whereas in gym we only played about three to seven minute games. In order to win you must have the most amount of goals. In this sport, body contact is allowed. You are able to use your hands, elbows, knees, etc. A handball player is given an unlimited number of penalties. Most games range from twenty goals from each team separately per game. Sometimes a team could even score around thirty goals. In earlier times when handball was just starting up only about five or six goals were scored per day. Handball was invented in Germany around the eighteen hundreds in order to keep soccer players in shape. The sport than was played like soccer and not like the modernized version we have today.
