In the play, Hamlet is consumed and driven by the idea of revenge; an idea played out in many Elizabethan dramas, and even continues in movies and television programs of today. The ultimate question is whether or not Hamlet is justified in his actions. Revenge causes people to act blindly in the moment, rather than carefully considering their actions and their consequences. After reading and watching the play, I believe that Hamlet was justified in his actions. His father is dead and his uncle inherits the throne while marrying his mother in a space of two months. Hamlet is forced to adjust to a new reality while not being given time to grieve and process the events. All of this is exacerbated by the appearance of the ghost demanding that Hamlet seek revenge, this causes the young prince to begin plotting and deciding how his revenge will be carried out. Hamlet is surrounded in world of intrigue and revenge and it is natural that he would follow in its march, albeit slowly and deliberately, it is not an easy thing to kill a king or a family member, which Hamlet will have to do to “revenge his most foul and unnatural murder.”(Ham. 1.5.5) The reasons that justifies Hamlet’s need for revenge are thus; First, The murder of his father in an age when the justice system rarely punished the wrong doer, especially when the suspect is the ruling monarch, secondly, The marriage to his mother when the father’s death hasn’t been grieved, and finally, the call by the ghost of his father for closure to his death. Using these reasons, this paper will explain that although revenge isn’t always the best course of action, it is in this case justified. The first reason that justifies Hamlet’s need for revenge is the murder of his father by his uncle who gets the throne.
