Reading Questions, Hamlet, Act 1 (due Friday, 3/6) 1. Particularly in scenes 1 and 2, how does Claudius’ speech reveal his character? Note examples; consider register, connotation, tone, etc. In scenes 1 and 2 Claudius’ speech reveal many characteristics about Claudius. I felt that Claudius was a hypocrite person. Claudius was talking to take the people out of grieving for the old king and looking for a better life ahead even though the one that had died was his own brother. Claudius said: “Tis unmanly grief. It shows a will most incorrect to heaven, a heart unfortified, a mind impatient, an understanding simple and unschooled.” This quote said by Claudius shows that he wanted everyone to “get over” the king’s death. Claudius speech shows the tone of anticipation. Claudius was anticipating the things that will follow his brother’s death and his own ruling. 2. How does Hamlet’s speech reveal his character? Hamlet’s speech reveals that his character is of someone that has a consuming outrage and righteous indignation when he finds the news of his father’s death. When he finds the truth hamlet’s character becomes someone that wants to take revenge. Hamlet is someone that respected his father tremendously, he said: “So excellent a king, that was to this Hyperion to a satyr, so loving to my mother, That he might not beteem the winds of heaven Visit her face too roughly; heaven and earth, Must I remember? When Hamlet meets his father’s ghost he becomes someone that wants to take revenge no matter how, he said: “Haste me to know’t, that I, with wings as swift as meditation or the thoughts of love, may sweep to my revenge.” 3.
