The development of plot, theme and characters tie together by Shakespeare’s character, Hamlet, whose hesitation created the plot of the story. Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, tells the story of a young man who must kill his uncle King Claudius who killed Hamlet’s father, the old King. After being visited by his father, Hamlet must kill the King to revenge his father’s murder. Without Hamlet’s hesitation in the play, there would not be a story at all. Shakespeare has Hamlet hesitate and wrestle with himself to develop Hamlet as a character, to have the reader think about loyalty to friends and family, and to also develop the theme of corruption. Shakespeare has Hamlet hesitate and wrestle with himself to develop Hamlet as a character. Throughout the play Hamlet develops into a mature character in the play. In the beginning Hamlet was defiant and agree about his situation with his father being dead and his uncle taking over. As the play continues the reader begins to understand that with out the changes in the rest of characters and how they turned on him made it possible for him to finally realize that the only person he could depend on was himself. That fact made him to be the man who was able to revenge his father’s death and to kill the King. “To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heart-ache and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to, 'tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish'd.”(Act III.i.)- Hamlet, In the “To be or not to be” speech Hamlet does not know what to do with himself. As he struggles with his thoughts, Hamlet realizes that his loyalty to his father’s wishes might be more important than death. Before Hamlet realizes that
