The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is a revenge tragedy by William Shakespeare, and is one of his most well-known plays. Young Hamlet is faced with the responsibility of attaining vengeance for his father’s murder. He wants the man who killed his father, and now wears the crown, to get what he deserves. Hamlet acts insane throughout the play; he does this because it’s part of his plan to gain the opportunity to kill his uncle Claudius, who murdered his father. “I am but mad north-north-west. When the / wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw.” (II, ii, 389-390) This quote reveals his insanity. They figured out it was King Hamlets ghost. He talked only to Prince Hamlet, his son. He told him he was murdered by the one who wears the crown, his brother Claudius. Hamlet was furious and designed a plan to kill him. Hamlet found out his father, King Hamlet was murdered by his own brother Claudius and is now the King and married his wife. Hamlet was very upset with this. Doesn’t like how his uncle is now his stepfather. A quote that reveals his insanity about the whole situation is, “O, God! A beast that wants discourse of reason / would have mourn’d longer,-married with mine uncle / my father’s brother; but no more like my father / than I to Hercules…” (I, ii, 150-153) Hamlet is going for vengeance.
