Her husband left early on in Emily’s life and her mother was forced to leave her with friends or send her to day care. “…and I did not know then what I know now- the fatigue of the long day, and the lacerations of group life in the kinds of nurseries that are only parking places for children” (Olsen 707). Emily got nowhere near the amount of attention she needed. Maggie, on the other hand, was always with her mother. Maggie’s mother was also older and better suited to be a mother because she was older and more experienced however, Maggie’s father also left the family.
According to Erikson, identity is a key aspect of adolescent development (Santrock, 2012, p.276). All Tracy’s life she has been without a father figure, aside from her mother’s husband. Little girls could not attend school and had to stay home and help their mothers. There are still many places around the world where women can’t work or go to school and lots of places where racism still happens. There are also many places where people have no rights because they have a dictator instead of a democracy. A dictator controls everyone and does not allow people to vote for their leader and usually gives the position to someone in their family when they die. It is usually in countries with dictators where women don’t have equal rights and cannot work or go to school.
One thing that could be argued, as I have already touched on, is Catherine’s childhood. Massie constantly refers back to Catherine’s life before royalty with her mother. Catherine’s mother, Johanna, never felt any maternal feelings towards Catherine. She had wanted a son, and when a daughter was born, she was not satisfied. She would give her child to servants to hold and never cared for her.

I started to flunk high school and started hanging out with the wrong crowd. At 15 I had got pregnant and knew right then that schooling for me was over. I dropped out of formal high school at age 15. I just wanted to work and take care of my soon to be child. I tried going to alternative school while working and pregnant but that did not last but a semester either.

Norma says this towards the end of the story, when Norma is essentially telling Leroy she wants to be alone. The 14 years alone she’d been alone had helped her deal with the death of her child Randy, and Leroy’s permanent return home has brought back those feelings of their lost child. We can also infer from this that, Norma may have purposely taken bodybuilding, and composition classes In order to avoid Leroy’s constant presence at home. In the story we can clearly see the
First, I would like to give some background information about the student that I am including within this essay. Laura is a year 6 child who has lived with her Nan since going into care as a baby. Her mum, who was young when she had her, had to give up care for her as she was unable to look after her properly. Unfortunately while living with Nan, Laura has had a disruptive homelife and this has caused numerous problems throughout her life. Nan shows her little attention and what little attention she receives seems to be negative and dismissive.
