D. Vasco da Gama was the 1st Count of Vidigueira, a Portuguese explorer, one of the most successful in the Age of Discovery and the commander of the first ships to sail directly from Europe to India. Vasco da Gama was born 1460 or 1469[2] in Sines, on the southwest coast of Portugal. Although Vasco`s family wasn`t the noblest one in the kingdom, nevertheless it was rather ancient and honored. When he was about 20 Vasco and his brothers entered Military Order of Saint James of the Sword, where he studied maths, navigation and astronomy. So, he was a knight, a militant man, who served his country. Since early ages he took part in some sea battles. Thus, in 1492, French corsairs occupied the ship with gold, which had been brought from Guinea to Portuguese. The Portugal king charged him to defeat all French crews. Vasco carried out the order and after all became a famous man and close to the king. In 1495 the king Immanuel the 1st decided to organize and sponsor the expedition from Portugal to India and chose Vasco da Gama as a captain. Especially for this expedition 4 ships were built: «San-Gabriel» commanded by Vasco da Gama, «San-Rafael», whose commander was his brother Paulo da Gama «Berrio» slightly smaller than the former two A storage ship of unknown name, which kept stores and things for trade. There was a very well-educated crew: some interpreters, an astronomer, a priest, many experienced sailors. There were about 100-170 people. In addition, the best maps and devices were used in the expedition. It`s interesting, that at that time there was a tradition to take some prisoners on board. It the seafaring was good, they were given the freedom after all. The expedition set sail from Lisbon on 8 July 1497.
