HALAL FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Islam is currently one of the largest and the fastest growing religions in the world and almost 25 per cent of the world’s population is of Muslims. Food products and beverages that are prepared or processed following the Shariah or the Islamic laws and regulations that determine whether it’s permissible, lawful and clean are termed as Halal. Halal food is just not restricted to the Muslim community; the demand from other communities is also increasing because of its excellent reputation as the healthiest and safest food. As of 2011 the worldwide Halal food industry is estimated at 650 billion dollars and enjoys 17 per cent share of the total global food market. UNDERSTANDING A SUPPLY CHAIN All parties that are involved directly or indirectly in meeting the requirements and expectations of a customer consist of a Supply Chain. According to Ganeshan and Harrison (1995) “Supply Chain is a network of facilities and distribution options that performs the functions of procurement of materials, transformation of these materials into intermediate and finished products, and the distribution of these finished products to customers”. A typical supply chain consists of Manufacturers, Suppliers, Transporters, Warehouses, Wholesalers, Retailers and the Customers. Customers are the integral part of the supply chains. Supply chains exist with a primary purpose to satisfy the customer’s needs while making a profit for themselves. As the supply chains are customer centred, we can say that the activities of a supply chain begins with a customer order and ends when a satisfied customer pays for the product purchased. A supply chain, which is simple in nature, is made up of the elements that are linked with the movement of the Product along these elements.
