Rojas 1 Maria Rojas English 1302.04 05 July 2011 Guns on College Campuses Recently a bill was passed by Congress permitting firearms on college campuses. There are many people that agree and others that disagree regarding this proposition. Based on the information obtained by various sources, I have found that there are many people opposing the bill. There are many points of view about the bill that need to be considered to make the right decision. If students are allowed to carry concealed weapons on college grounds and a shooting breaks out, this will make it hard for the law enforcement to identify the real perpetrators during a shooting. If guns are in the wrong hands someone could accidently fire their weapon showing off at a party or get angry and shoot someone else. According to Garcia, a student at UTPA comments on the article by Kristen Cabrera’s Guns on Campus states that “concealed handgun license is a 10-houe class” (Cabrera 1). That is not enough time for someone to consider them experienced gun carrier. Using and carrying a fire arm is an ongoing responsibility. The university was struck by a gunman who killed 33 people including him, and 15 others were wounded. John Gramlich states in the article Arizona approves gun on college campus that “the governor of Arizona Jan Brewer has been a supporter of the bill” (Gramlich 1). Supporter’s, states that students and faculty would be able to protect themselves should someone attack with a firearm. But there is no reason to fight back with fire. More gunfire will only escalate violence, which only leads to more violence. The controversy is still going on nationwide as to whether or not students should be allowed to carry guns on campus. No mom wants her son or daughter to be shot, much less while he or she is at school. Utah is the only state that allows carrying guns on nine public universities. Now more states are trying to push and pass the bill in Congress. States such as Arizona, Alabama, and Virginia have already adopted this bill due to the incidents they have experienced; many other states across the nation are trying to do the same
