During the past two decades, more and more young Americans have been dying violent deaths. The United States suffers far more young violent deaths than any other wealthy nation. For many years Americans have been dying at younger ages than people in almost all other wealthy countries (huffingtonpost.com). In these years the rate of youths involved in motor vehicle and other accidental deaths has been climbing while suicide and homicide rates have shot up dramatically. Moreover, violent deaths are becoming a larger proportion of all youth mortality. Suicides and homicides accounted for less than 8 percent of all youth deaths; two decades later they accounted for 20 percent. For 15–24 year olds, homicide is the second leading cause of death and claims more than 8,500 lives each year; suicide is the third leading cause of death among this group and claims 4,140 lives each year. (cdc.gov.) violent behavior is experienced more by male adolescents than their female peers. Males are much more likely to have been in a physical fight and be threatened/injured with a weapon. In addition, adolescent males are also more likely to carry a weapon. Gun violence touches every segment of our society. It increases the probability of deaths in incidents of domestic violence, raises the likelihood of fatalities by those who intend to injure others and among those who attempt suicide, places children and young people at special risk, and disproportionately affects communities of…show more content…
The pain of losing a younger sibling hurts down inside. Not being able to see what my nephew could have accomplished in his life still hurts me. It has not just affected me but my entire family, all we have our memories of what we had. It has left us distraught, because he left behind his only daughter as well now we must try to fill that void he left for her. But we not only lost a family member, the suspect’s family lost a young teen as well, not to death but to the system.
