Gun Control Research Project Aarron Locklin Lonestar College System Some Americans are convinced that more federal regulation of firearms is needed to reduce the number of homicides that are committed with guns and to ensure a safer, more civilized society. Others who support ownership of firearms proclaim that the right to bear arms is guaranteed by the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and that no increase in crime, no mass killing, nor any political murders should lead the nation to violate the Constitution and the individual rights it guarantees. There were 26 participants half being male and half being female. One question from the survey created for this paper asked "In general, would you say you favor stricter gun control, or less strict gun control?" and the other asked specifically about semi-automatic handguns. Data from these two polls show that the participants support legislation to regulate firearms, but there were some differences of opinion by gender. The majority of pole takers favor stricter handgun control laws. The women though were significantly more likely than men to want stricter gun laws. While nearly half of all respondents voted favoring stricter gun control laws, women were far more in favor than were men. When participants were asked whether they favored or opposed a ban on the nationwide sale of assault weapons, a majority said they were in favor. Again, men and women differed. Many gun control supporters expected that Littleton, in response, would increase support for stronger gun control laws, or at least to restrict youth access to guns. The Littleton shootings attracted a tremendous amount of media and public attention. That media coverage and public attention, however, did not transform into support for gun control laws. Littleton did increase the importance of crime and gun violence in everyone’s mind. Littleton motivated the majority of the American public who already support gun control laws, but did not change people's opinions about how to control the problem of crime and gun violence.
