------------------------------------------------- GUIDELINES FOR WRITING KNOWN REPORT I. FORMATTING A. Type all sections in 12-point font, 1.5 or double line spaced. B. Use only Times New Roman, Arial, Calibri, Cambria (true type-face fonts). C. Use a 1-inch margins on all sides. D. Each section should begin on a new page. The beginning of each section should state the section title (i.e., Abstract, Results, etc.). E. Your last name and page number should appear in the top right header of all pages except for the title page. F. Spelling will count! Be sure to spell any organism name and/or test correctly. Organism name should be italicized and properly capitalized (i.e., Escherichia coli or E. coli). The first time you mention an organism you should use its full scientific name (genus and species). You may use the abbreviated version for all subsequent mentions (i.e., Escherichia coli first and then E. coli will be acceptable). G. Write in 3rd person (DO NOT use "I", "me", "my", etc.). Example: Do NOT write: "I performed a SIM test." Do write: "SIM test was performed." II. TITLE PAGE A. Do not underline, italicize, bold, or increase font of your title. B. Center the title in the middle of the page. C. Include: 1. Your name 2. Your section number 3. Date the report is due 4. Unknown Number 5. Family, genus and species names of the unknown organism (which you would have determined through the tests). III. ABSTRACT A. An abstract is a brief summary of your report B.
