Steven Gudewich Professor Hobson English 102 21 September 2012 Advertisement Analysis Literally, everywhere in today’s society, there is a constant bombardment of different advertisements and products. When we are driving, we pass billboard after billboard. When we are walking, we pass telephone booths or bus stops with ads plastered on the sides. When we are watching videos on YouTube, we usually sit through a 15 or 30 second commercial before we watch the video we originally wanted to watch. When we are on a bus or a subway car, advertisements line the walls and ceilings. One cannot simply open up a magazine to read the articles before flipping through about ten pages of advertisements. Newspapers are littered with sale ads, special promotions, and other advertisements for stores. Television shows, movies, and musicians are paid by companies to use and display their products in scenes. Even when we watch American Idol, all of the celebrity judges are drinking out of red Coca-Cola cups that are positioned so the logo always faces the direction of the camera. Even with all of these constant attacks of commercials, there is a certain system to how these messages are being conveyed to the reader, and how it is presented to get the right consumer to focus on the right product. Advertisements are aimed toward a certain audience. This is very obvious when we think about what advertisements are presented on Nickelodeon for children, as opposed to Comedy Central, which is more of an adult channel. There is no reason for Johnny Walker to make an appeal to children watching Spongebob, or for Air Hogs to market toward adults at 11 o’clock at night. The Gucci advertisement features the body and legs of a man, while a beautiful woman crawls at his feet, indicate that Gucci makes the man powerful.
