Growing Up Literate in a Poor Urban Place

There are many success stories about children who beat the odds and rise up out of poverty to become successful. Unfortunately, statistics show that children who were born in poverty are far more likely to become unemployed or underemployed adults. Children who are born in less affluent homes are more likely to suffer from health related issues, have more difficulties with reading and have higher dropout rates than children from upper or middle class neighborhoods. Growing up literate in a poor urban place is a blessing; coz many children from low socioeconomic environments have lower reading scores than their upper and middle class counterparts. One reason for their struggle with literacy is because many parents who are living in poverty also have difficulty reading. As a result, they do not have books in the home and do not read to their children. As a result, their children struggle with reading and often end up living in poverty when they become adults. Children in poverty attend school less frequently than other children for several reasons. First, they have more health problems and have less access to quality medical care, which means that they miss school more often than upper or middle class children. They may also lack in social or coping skills, and their behavior issues can lead to suspensions or expulsions. Their poor attendance can contribute to their learning difficulties. . Schools in high poverty areas tend to be located in more dangerous neighborhoods. They attend low-performing schools and are taught by fewer highly qualified teachers. Their schools have fewer resources and less opportunity for enrichment. In addition, teens in poverty tend to engage in more at-risk behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse, early sexual activity and violence.
