Asses the View That Culture Deprivation Is the Main Cause of underachievement amongst working class students. It may be argued that due to lack of family structure and social, a child is more likely to underachieve. There are many cultural deficiencies often associated with a child's potential and achievement. Cultural deprivation is a theory that many working-class children are inadequately socialised and therefore lack the "right" culture appropriate for a successful education. Working class children are less likely to succeed because they are less likely to be found in nursery schools, less likely to go to university and more likely to be poor readers when they start school, more likely to be in lower sets and streams in secondary school, more likely to leave school early, more likely to underachieve at GCSEs and a level, more likely to be excluded and suspended .This is because the middle-class culture children are adequately prepared for school, but it's totally reverse for working-class culture, it basically fails to prepare children adequately for educational success.
Retention, though, has proved to not help students academically. Another astonishing factor is that the more students retained, the more likely they are going to drop out in school. Also, most adults that have been held back are more likely to end up unemployed, living off of government assistance, or in jail than the students who were not held back. All promotion tests do is widen the gap between students without learning disabilities and those that are disabled (Finn, Petrilli 80-85). Furthermore, standardized testing is not a good indicator for college students’ ability to make good grades.
People with low income also tend to have lesser education because they have fewer opportunities and many students drop out of school because they need to go into the workforce to support their family. I personally have family that live in Texas and live in poverty. Most of them have never graduated from high school and each time an election is held they never go out and vote. They don’t understand why they need to vote so they just don’t bother. Social class
Howard (2001) noted that young people from poorer homes have lower intakes of energy, vitamins, and minerals. Poor nutrition will affect health, children’s energy levels will be low, resulting in poor concentration in class, they will also have a weaker immune system meaning more days off of school. Wilkinson (1996) ‘the lower the social class, the higher the rate of hyperactivity, anxiety, and conduct disorders’ which obviously have a negative impact on education. There is also the

The two-year and four-year lower tier schools are predominantly African American and Hispanic. The lower tier schools face issues of overcrowding, under-resourced and students are more likely to be working while going to school. These facts make graduating from one of these colleges more difficult and significantly less likely. The system is unequal in most areas. Many students pursing an advanced degree at lower-tier colleges or universities will have less life and career aspirations than their Caucasian and Asian counterparts.
Separating the age groups of children increase there social skills and it will increase their knowledge because they will have separate teachers for separate subjects. A majority of metro area districts will have low income families along with high crime and violence. Metro school districts will also have a low gradation rate, the nations ten largest public high school districts failed to graduate more than 60 percent of its students. These ten school districts account for 8 percent of the nations students (Greene & Winters, 2006). If only four out of ten students are graduating in these areas there must be a substantial reason.

(6 marks) One material factor that may cause working class underachievement is lack of workspace at home. Poverty leads to material deprivation whereby this involves cramped housing, an environment where the child has no space for homework and where illnesses spread quickly. This means that the children are unable to do homework, thus fall behind on work in class, which in turn leads to low educational attainment.
Lower-income children are not always given the same opportunity to receive a high quality education. When impoverished children are subjected to an education where there is a 35 to 1 student-teacher ratio and limited amount of class materials and resources such as books, they are sent a message that no one values them or their education, causing many students to lose their passion for education. The impoverished are also viewed as individuals who cannot handle their finances and save for a rainy day. Many like to believe that the impoverished do not know the value of a dollar, and only splurge on frivolous things. The reality is that lower-income families barley makes enough to cover their bills.
(3) In this case a child’s early development such as their education can help avoid the strain of economic inequality. It is stated, “black children are less likely to learn as much as white children from two to four years of age.” This lack of early childhood education can produce negative social and economic outcomes. If a child’s parent has a high level learning such as college a degree children are more likely to succeed in school. What about children in lower income homes? These children are usually victims of low quality education and obstruct the income equality gap, as they grow older.
