Plan and Conduct Group Activities Assessment 1 – Group Observation/Report Name the aims/goals of the group To learn the necessary information required to achieve Certificate IV in Community Services at NCI TAFE Port Macquarie Campus, with classes being two three hour lectures a day two days a week plus smaller groups running their own project work for 120 hours. History background of the group The group has a diverse background with ages ranging from 18 to 50 something. The gender balance is predominantly female with a small male presence. The group has had a certain shift in numbers as several people have left for various reasons and others have joined the group for some classes, while others whom had RPL for Semester 1 have returned for Semester 2.The group formed from many life experiences including running businesses, raising families, working on cruise ships amongst many other occupations, straight from school and single, married and separated or divorced. Each person has brought their own particular set of personal circumstances, financial level and learning capacity to the group. Leadership There are two types of leadership styles observed within this particular group. One with the leader being the teacher, directing how the group will work for that class i.e. watching DVD’s, small groups, speaking to the group as a whole while encouraging participation and discussion or a combination of methods. This is being a Democratic Leader. Democratic Leaders have the following characteristics  A changing role in the group, depending on the stage of development of the group.  Willing to share the leadership role  Consult with members and involve with the decision making process  Consider task and maintenance as important  Willing to let go and not authoritarian The other style of leadership shown in this group quite frequently by one member is
