He’s so arrogant and overconfident when he arrives to the mead hall, he wraps a table cloth around his neck to serve as a dinner napkin. When the fight in between Beowulf and Grendel begin, Grendel is immediately overtaken by Beowulf’s incredible strength. Grendel views Beowulf as a demon or archangel. In Grendels point of view, Beowulf goes from the good guy, to the tricky bad guy. Grendel feels as if though he is the victim in this instance.

An example of Grendel killing the innocent people around him is, when Beowulf’s warriors are sleeping Grendel sneaks into the room, attacks the men and tares them to pieces. DiPietro-2 Again, good is being shown, in this circumstance the kenning “mighty protector of men” portrays Beowulf as a supernatural being of good and that it is his obligation to fight for humanity. In addition, it shows the severity of this battle, because it will determine whether good or evil triumphs (“fiend was no use to anyone in Denmark”). In the end, “ A prince of the Geats, had killed Grendel, ended the grief, the sorrow, the suffering […] by a bloodthirsty fiend”(404-407). The expression of despair the monster forces unto the Danes is a representation of evil. Additionally, the fact Beowulf is successful shows that good is
Golding uses allegory to show that the darkness of humanity destroys society. In the Lord of the Flies, Jack who represents the darkness of humanity and attempts to destroy Ralph who represents society. “They hate you, Ralph. They’re going to do you. They’re going to hunt you tomorrow” (170).
Beowulf’s goodness is described in his battle against evil, symbolized by Grendel, one of the monsters defeated by him. The epic shows conflict between good and evil. The monster claimed to be a virtuous creature, until the actions of humans made him miserable. “All men hate the wretched; how then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by the annihilation of one of us.” (Vol. II Chapter II, Page 117).
By reading both Grendel and Beowulf you are able to perceive how Beowulf and the humans see Grendel against how Grendel sees himself. In Beowulf, Grendel was a bloodthirsty force of destruction, and a ruthless beast. Constantly attracting Hrothgars mead hall and killing innocent for fun, Grendel's attack is described as "Suddenly then/ the God-cursed brute was creating havoc:/ greedy and grim, he grabbed thirty men/ from their resting places and rushed to his lair,/ flushed up and inflamed from the raid,/ blundering back with the butchered corpses" (Beowulf 120-125). Until Beowulf is called into take the place of the hero and put things back in order. Due to the fact that Beowulf is telling the story, were only able to see what he and the other humans see about Grendel and thus can only find a way to relate to those characters and only know what they and the author tell us.
