Greg Abbott Greg Abbott was born on November 13,1957 in Wichita Falls, Texas. His mother’s name was Doris Lechristia and his father name was Calvin Abbott. Doris worked as a homemaker while his father Calvin worked as a stockbroker and insurance agent. Greg was raised mostly in Duncanville, Texas for most of his life. While he was in high school he was on the track team. During his senior year in high school he won every meet he entered during track season. He also was an active member in national honors society and in his high school class he was voted most likely to succeed. In 1981 Greg Abbott went to college at University of Texas at Austin where he earned a Bachelor of Buisness Administration in finance. In college he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and the young republicans club. It was at college where he met his future wife Cecilia Phelen. He went back to school at the Vanderbilt University Law School in Nashville, Tennessee. After he graduated from Vanderbilt he worked for Butler, Binion, LLC doing private practice work from 1984-1992. In 1984 tragedy struck when Greg Abbott was jogging with a friend following a thunderstorm when a tree fell on him. The tree broke his back and several of his ribs. After this catastrophic event Greg Abbott became a paraplegic and bound to a wheelchair. WHen he was doing intense rehabilitation at TIRR Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston he had two steel rods inserted in his spine and he has been bound to a wheelchair ever since. After he got done with the rehabilitation Greg Abbott sued the homeowner of the home in which the tree fell on him. He was awarded a settlement worth more than $10 million dollars which was paid in installments of $14,000 dollars a month. Greg Abbott would later use laws capping punitive damages to two times the original amount of the settlement. Greg Abbott first got into politics
