Kareem Albadawi Ancient World History 1/27/11 Xenia (hospitality) Xenia is time in Greek life where if a person is needed help and didn’t have a place to stay, they would have they concept where the person in need would go to a home of a stranger and get help. The function of Xenia is a good thing not a burden. Now, the value of Xenia was sometimes used differently like violation of Xenia. Xenia reflected the community of the Greeks through examples of the stories by Socrates. Also, the emergence of Hospitality was starting to become bigger in Greek life once trade became very well known in the Greek community.
Hospitality also means that people could travel without being rejected or having no where to go. A host never knew if a beggar was a god in disguise. In Greece and The Odyssey, good hospitality etiquette was greatly expected. The hosts were supposed to offer the best of their food, home, and knowledge. When welcomed into a house, one was to be gracious and not be demanding.
Is Socrates a Believable Character? Socrates, as most know, is a man famous for offending Athenian beliefs during 4th century BC. Philosophy was not accepted at this time therefore many believed Socrates rambled on about nonsense. Although this seemed like nonsense to people living in Athens at the time, Socrates still voiced his opinion as his love for philosophy was more important then what was said of him. As history shows, Socrates is a believable character as the Apology written by Plato has many examples showing he truly is philosophical and wise.
I also thought they seemed very simple and plain, they didn’t really show much emotion unless they were drunk. But since Ian didn’t really have a specific culture, he learned Toula’s culture through acculturation (mainly for Toula’s family’s acceptance). He showed Toula’s family he would do anything to get their approval so he got baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church in order to become “Greek” since that was such a huge issue to Toula’s father and the rest of the family. Toula’s family and Ian’s
However the Spartan men would start their training at the age of seven and they were thought to be tough and self sufficient. The life in Sparta wasn't simple but others envied them for their straight forwardness and fanatical dedication. The law in Sparta that prohibited all foreign trade and foreign travelling kept ideas from coming in and they had surprises when it came to attacks. Spartan women had the freedom of rights except they could not vote. They were not forced to do the things Athenian women did.
I say this B/c Eric thought Griffin would be a good friend to hang-out with b/c of the way he respected other people. But in reality he was only gaining people's trust, and not for the right doing. He also manipulated people in doing things for him. Such as, the people how hangs around him. The title relates to this story b/c Eric was the bystander that didn't do anything when Griffin beat up David.
Their destruction of the shelter is also a destruction of the friendship, with the Stockton family. Although a message is issued stating it was a false alarm, the damage is done and the true colors of friendship have been shown. Often people are put in the same situation, however not just choosing between people or things, but also peer pressure demands people to make important decisions. In “The Shelter” Dr. Stockton chooses what is most important to him, which was his family and true friends. In the end people will choose what is best for them rather than being pressured to go against their true
The people in charge however didn’t feel the same about it so the party came to try enforcing a equal opportunity for their community. They never showed hate towards others of different races but just made emphasis for their own community. They didn’t want more but to help and keep the oppressed people of their communities’ safe without being told they couldn’t. This became a threat once they saw how educated and influencing they became so quickly. Nothing is more harmful then a strong educated black male and female who knows they’re
Ian Millar finds it easy to belong, as he is an understanding man who embraces the foreign Greek culture. Toula Portokalos finds it hard to belong in the mainstream culture because of her family’s culture, mostly because of her father having strong morals this is shown through dialogue “Marry a Greek boy, make Greek babies, and feed everyone in the family till the day you die”. Toula is different to her sister Athena. Toula’s immediate appeal to the audience is her struggle with what she is supposed to do or be. The relationship with Ian first emerges because Toula feels that she does not belong in the Greek life style or the life to which her family wants her to belong
The success of the hotel depended upon these three things working in perfect harmony together. Mark placed major focus on the people aspect in order to yield the results he wanted at every angle. Placing emphasis on people led the hotel to focus on hiring individuals that shared the same values. People who care and respect others, who smile naturally, who seek a long term relationship and those who have talent for the job. The
