There are many ways of lying. Dismissal lies have positive and negative consequences in any way they are used. Dismissal is the most sneakiest lies and occasional lies of all and it is used to dismiss feelings, perceptions, or any facts of a situation. This lie may prove that any person’s perceptions aren’t right. For example, from the essay, a child tells her mother she’s scared, but the mother immediately tells her that “she is not”, therefore making her perceptions inaccurate.
53-55, when Corinth was a bustling port city. The culture of the time steeped deeply in the occult and pagan idolatry and philosophy. Apparently the Corinthian church had gotten itself mixed up in sexually immoral practices and associated with idolatry which warranted them Paul’s harsh rebuke in chapter 5. Chapter 10 refers to Numbers as a means of warning the church against idolatry and many of the other sins the Israelites committed in their journey through the desert. Paul calls out sexual immorality (v.8) and reminds his audience of the 23,000 (24,000 in the OT account) that died as a penalty of sexual immorality.
Lauren Smith Mrs. Heather Minton W-131 ACP Composition 13 September 2010 Summary of “The Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal: Sources of Sadism” The theme discussed in the article “The Abu Ghraib Prison Scandal: Sources of Sadism”, is how the average person is capable of doing some form of evil. The author, Marianne Szegedy- Maszak, openly discusses in her writing the actions of American soldiers taking humiliating pictures of prisoners in Abu Ghraib. Szegedy-Maszak begins to discuss the possibilities of how these actions came to take place. Some interpretations are listed: inadequate training, overzealous intelligence gathering, or failure of leadership. After listing these potential actions, Szegedy-Maszak asks, “Are there particular conditions in Iraq today that might shed light on why these soldiers committed these unconscionable acts?” (Szegedy-Maszak 211) Szegedy-Maszak declares that in a 1971 study by psychologist Philip Zimbardo, showed how cruel people can be to each other because a higher power told them they could to enforce superiority.
Why We Lie There are many reasons why people lie. Some have ulterior motives while others plainly lie with the sole intention of deceiving someone. In Ericson’s essay “ The Ways We Lie” she lists several examples of the different kinds of ways people lie, like innocent white lies. She also explains the different ways people deceive, such as ignoring the plain facts and leaving out major points to the story. When I read “ The Ways We Lie” it made me think of all the lies I produce without even thinking twice about the effects my lies have on people.
In his article, Hammer talks about two types of scientific transgression, negligence and deliberate misconduct. He provides an example of deliberate misconduct in the section about a scientific paper entitled “Cell”. The paper had questionable data that had been provided by one of its authors Thereza Imanishi-Kiri. Imanishi-Kiri deliberately fabricated data in order to support the paper, and when the NIH board began to investigate, she contrived even more data. Her cowriter, unaware of this fraud, supports Imanishi-Kiri by making strong and hostile statements defending Imanishi-Kiri to the NIH investigating board, damaging his own credibility.
The whole “scandal” is down to the church’s acceptance of abuse and it’s a pity that only 30 years later we are doing something about it. I think it is important to have a clear definition of what sexual abuse is before I go any further; Sexual abuse is defined as the intentional touching or molesting of the body of a child whether by a person or object for the purpose of sexual arousal or gratification. The Murphy Report is a document produced by The Dublin Archdiocese Commission of Investigation. This Commission was established to investigate the handling by church and state into the allegations of child sex abuse by clerics under the Archdiocese of Dublin between 1975 and 2004. It is important to know however that the Murphy Report is only concerned with the response of the church and state to the allegations and not in establishing whether or not abuse took place.
In Winston’s society nobody can be trusted. The whole society is built upon lies being told and getting the people to believe them. In a society where the past can be changed within seconds no one can be trusted. Julia is just another liar that Winston believes. Many people who Winston met throughout the book were liars and
This case generated a great deal of press time because it brought infamy to the academically prestigious school Duke. Another example of the media’s focus on false rape accusations is the case of Heidi Jones, a weatherwoman who claimed to have been raped and then admitted to cops that she fabricated the story as a bid for sympathy. Due to her slight
Raga Pribadi Mr. Randolph Academic English 11 2 March 2011 Denying the Undeniable How much longer will it take for one nation to tolerate those who accept the unacceptable and hide the immoral acts they committed? Subsequent years of mistakes hidden and made by role models, heroes, and leaders reveal that their tolerance of their baneful deeds led to destruction. Consequences caused by their carelessness not only impacts themselves, but also the people who surround them. Observing their campaigns and terms, proof of wreckage and downfall resides within political leaders such as: Bill Clinton, Rod Blagojevich, and Lewis Libby proved why the passive acceptance of their own injustices may be the greatest evil of all.
