Since the beginning of the depression, a fifth of all banks had been forced to close. As a consequence, around 15% of people's life-savings had been lost. By the beginning of 1933 the American people were starting to lose faith in their banking system and a significant proportion were withdrawing their money and keeping it at home. The day after taking office as
For a family of four that level is $22,000 annually or less. The thing, is a lot of people have to live way under that level because the jobs that they can get do not pay much at all. Many high school students are dropping out of school to get restaurant jobs to help their families out. Also, people who want to go back to school to better their lives can’t because the cost is too much and there is not enough aid to pay for college. Because of the recession many Americans are forced to leave their houses and move in with family.
There were other causes of the great depression and not just due to the crash of the stock markets. Farmers during these times were experiencing their own great depressions due mainly to overproduction. By 1932, almost one-fourth of Americans in the workforce were unemployed. (Beard, 114) President Hoover took steps to lessen the effects of the crisis, but made little change. (fdrlibrary.marist.edu) Both Hoover and Roosevelt waited for change to take place of its own.
Americans are brought to believe that if they work hard, they will succeed in life. This is not the case though, due to the lack of education to earn a living wage for most families already in poverty. In 2005, thirty-seven million Americans, representing twelve-point-seven percent of the population, lived below the poverty line (Beegle 15). High school dropouts are more likely to be unemployed and earn a lower wages. Studies show that in 1993, the risk of poor children were two times higher for grade repetition and high school drop outs, one-point-three times more for parents reporting emotional or behavioral problems, and six-point-eight times for reported cases of child neglect (Beegle 17).
The Holocaust museums takes the viewer into the life of a Jew during these darker times. Adolph Hitler is probably one of the worst people ever to live. When people talk of evil deeds he is at the top of the list. He was a man of words, and could use them to his advantage. He had an ability to talk and make the Germans believe that the Jews were the reason for the problems in their country; so he gave them the idea to move
The Great Depression started in October 1929 when the stock market crashed. Farming income fell some 50 percent, and in 1932 approximately one out of every four Americans was unemployed. By 1933 the whole value of stock on the New York Stock Exchange was less than a fifth of what it had been at its peak in 1929, the novel is set in California. This was where most people migrated to during the 1930’s and 40’s, most migrants ended up competing for seasonal jobs picking crops at extremely low wages. George and Lennie are the main characters in the book they are migrant workers, but in chapter 4 Steinbeck focuses on Crooks.
However, there was no unilateral view on how to tackle the Depression and so the Weimar Governments between the years of 1928 and 1933 went through 4 different Chancellors before Hitler and his Nazi Party finally took over in January 1933 with public support. During the Depression, millions of people lost their jobs and there was poverty, hunger and homelessness. Carr writes that “unemployment grew by leaps and bounds” whilst Lacey and Shephard note that “for the unemployed this was a time of extreme poverty”. Betwen 1930 and 1932, 18,000 farmers and 50,000 businesses had gone bankrupt. The depression reminded H. Hauser “of the war, of the worst period of starvation in 1917 and 1918, but even then people paid for potatoes”.
Hitler used propaganda, elimination of the opposition, and a cult of personality to gain the support and trust of the German people in a time of economic crisis to his benefit and the rest of the world's loss. Single party states arise from a crisis, and Germany was suffering from a very large one at that time. The end of World War I in 1918 had left the economic state in shambles, and the loss struck the German people hard. Furthermore, the Treaty of Versailles the following year resulted in the demilitarisation and many cuts from German land and territory. Hitler criticized the carving up of Europe by the "Big Four" (the US, UK, France and Italy), stating that the Germans were the "master race".
Due to the fact, only the USA was able to produce manufactured goods and agricultural exports for more than a decade. The Great Depression The stock market collapsed in 1929. As a result, it wipe out about 40 percent of the paper values of common stock (Gene, 2008). However, people continued to issue optimistic predictions for economy of the USA. Then, Countless number of individuals lost their life savings along with the Depression.
With politics being a major part of Italian depression it had also taken great affect on Germany as well. With the Germans very upset about the outcome of the Treaty of Versailles and what they had to face they soon realized that their economic and political instability was not as great as it once was. With Hitler’s powerful use of words and the support of the Nazi party they soon began to persuade the people of Germany to
