Gran Torino Ryan Clarke Mr. Shannon 7 pages, 2083 words Due: Mon, October 17 The film Gran Torino is the transformation of self, focusing on the individuals in a community and the things that bind them. It is the distinction between selflessness and selfishness; it is the transformation of a person and a community to push through the barrier of self and to move outside of yourself. This film contrasts altruism to egocentricity, in that the minor characters in the film demonstrate the concept of egotistical self-centeredness. One such minor character is the gang of “black kids” who pick on Sue and her phony boyfriend while they are out on there “date”. These kids only think of themselves as they bully and “put down” Sue and her “boyfriend”, as they try to glorify themselves. In the end, as they bully Sue they get “put in their place” by Walt. The fact that this gang is purely a bunch of bigoted ingrates that think too much of themselves is shown by their actions. Thao and sues grandmother is another character that fails to consider others. She shows she doesn’t have respect when she insults Walt in her own language. She is afraid of Walt this is shown by saying it in her language and its even greater disrespect because he won’t understand it. She also compares him to a rooster and says he’s the only white guy left in the neighborhood. Another group of characters that exhibit these characteristics is Walt’s son Mitch, and Mitch’s wife and kids. All of them are completely self centered and the wife only cares about Walt’s wife’s jewelry, and Walt’s granddaughter only cares about his Gran Torino and his couch. There lack of concern shows that his family doesn’t actually care about him they are in fact entirely materialistic people who just want things from him. The last group is the Humong gang who are the main antagonists throughout the film.
