Character Analysis “Graduation” In the story, “Graduation,” by Maya Angelou, the author portrays the girl in the story, Marguerite Johnson, as a typical anxious, excited graduate. Marguerite feels like she is the star of the moment. She knew that she was going to be the best looking person at the ceremony. Marguerite Johnson acts like most graduating students. She is excited about what she is going to wear, and how lovely she is going to look. In the text it states, “I was going to be lovely. A walking model of all the various styles of fine hand sewing and it…” (Angelou 866) She was excited about her mother making her dress because she described in detail how her mother was sewing the dress. “She smocked the yoke into tiny crisscrossing puckers, and then shirred the rest of the bodice.” (Angelou 866) Another characteristic that showed Marguerite is excited, and anxious to graduate is that she began to smile more often as the days became closer. “I had taken to smiling more often, and my jaws hurt from the unaccustomed activity.” (Angelou 867) She was at the top of her class, and knew she was going to be called first. Marguerite is anxious to march across the stage all the way up until the guess speaker Donleavy had spoke. She felt like he put down the black race, and had exposed them. When her name was called she was not as excited, as she was in the beginning to walk across the stage. She said she was going to march up to the stage like a conquering Amazon, but when her name was called she just walked regular as planned, The girl in the story is excited to graduate because she is ranked at the top of her class, and felt like this was finally her day. She prepared how she is going to act all the way up until her name was called. Marguerite described the way her dress was being made and how stunning she was going to look.
