GORDON PARKS: FLAVIO’S HOME Parks shows us that seeing Flavio in a terrible situation of cough, malnutrition coupled with a lack in good hygiene, is an epitome of abject poverty. Moreover, Flavio had many responsibilities seemingly more than his parents. He took care of nearly everything around the house. Flavio prepared rice by washing it in a large dishpan, washed Zacaria’s feet in the same water and asked his younger siblings to wash up using the same finished water from the washed rice. He later washed dirty floor and himself with the remaining water. Despite his nearly debilitating health condition, he cooked the food, fetched the water and managed his younger siblings. He got some firewood, took a few minutes rest after a strenuous walk and went down the mountain for more water. He often got a sagging body from exhaustion after coming back home later in the dark. Through all of this, he maintained courage and an optimistic spirit. That was often displayed by his smile, even as he was waging a hopeless battle against starvation. Parks found Flavio in Catacumba. Parks and his acolyte life reporter, Jose Gallo, rested in the shade of jacaranda tree halfway up to Rio de Jaeiro. While Parks was in Rio de Janeiro, he stayed in a hotel on the Copacabana waterfront, where a lot of people are crammed in formal attire. Park included a description of his accommodations because he was wondering how his oversized room can fit Da Silva’s shack in its small corner. Through Flavio’s appalling conditions, he remained positive and fought to live because of the love he had for his younger brothers and sisters. Parks assured him by saying “Everything’s going to be all right, Flav. There’s nothing to worry about” [page220]. Parks promised him a better future and worked towards a realization of it.
