The first couple of years were not easy for the settlers. The question is Why did so many colonist die? To start off with, one of the problems they faced was environmental problems. Many of Jamestown’s colonist died because of brackish water which was some salty water due to the mixture of fresh and salt water, because of the tides that would happen twice daily. Also, they would dump their human waste into the water and make it even more contaminated so when the people of Jamestown would drink or use the water it would make them ill and even to the point that they died.
One Big Soul Prompt: Support the idea that a major theme in this novel is that all men are part of the family of man. In the novel, The Grapes of Wrath, John Steinbeck shows theme through the hardships of the Okies. Even through the hardships they faced on the journey to California, the Joad Family helped give rides and food to other poor migrants. The Joads were also helped buy others also in misfortune. Even though most Okies were low on money and didn’t have space in their cars, they let others in need join them.
David no longer existed in his family, and he was now referred to as “The Boy”. Steven and Catherine’s marriage became worse over time, blamed onto David from many midnight beatings in the family kitchen. David was becoming even more resilient to his mother by just taking the beatings and waiting for her to run out of
It wasn’t long after he stopped playing with them that he started his own group called Blackbird. They played late night gigs in local bars where he lived. This became a problem for Stevie because he was staying out late and it affected his schoolwork and he started failing. After his grades started to drop his parents made him get a job at the local Dairy Mart washing dishes. Part of his job was to clean out the trash bin, which required him to have to stand on top of 55 gallon barrels with wooden lids that were used for storing grease.
“D”: Roger Chillingworth Roger Chillingworth, Hester Prynne’s, deformed husband, slowly transforms into what many call the Black Man. Chillingworth’s transformation, ultimately detrimental to Reverend Dimmesdale’s health, began once he questioned the reverend about sin, and his obsession did not, “set him free again until he had done all” of his searching (117). He leeched info out of poor Dimmesdale every day until, “there was a fiend at his elbow” his own self (155)! Chill., hired to help nurse Dimm. back to health, actually took more years off his life.
As soon as doodle and his brother finished eating they went off to Horsehead Landing. When they reached the landing, Doodle was to tired to swim, so he just went with the tides. After they had drifted a long way, clouds started to gather and turn black. When Doodle and his brother finally reach Horsehead Landing they heard lightning scream, it silenced the sea. By that time Doodle was exhausted and terrified, and so he fainted into a pile of mud, his brother surprisingly helped him up, and decided to go back home.
In reading the book Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank, I thought the main character, Randy, was quite believable. Throughout the book he showed many human emotions for example; when he received the message of “Alas, Babylon” from his brother he immediately went into action to prepare the necessary supplies he thought they would need. However, being a bachelor and having no one that he was responsible for he forgot some of the items that a family with children might need. He bought pounds of steaks since he was used to eating primarily meat and forgot to buy such staples as flour, sugar and salt that a family would need. When Peyton was blinded by the bomb he immediately stepped in to help her and protect her filling his role as her temporary father figure.
He found a valley and a camp of Nez Perce Indians who gave him food. His stomach revolted due to the previous lack of food and he fell ill. September 22, 1805 – We arrived at the Nez Perce villages and all fell ill from the food we ate. Our stomachs cannot adjust well thanks to living on such a meager diet for so long. September 26, 1805 – We began canoe making. We have used up a lot of our goods for barter on trading with the natives for food.
He survives by himself in the woods and makes his way back. Missing for a day or two, he finally returns. The thought that he was without food or water for that long is amazing. He makes it back just in time, before dying from dehydration and food deprivation. Henry also earns his Red Badge of Courage during the ambush, after he being hit with the butt of a gun.
After he enrolled in the Dr. T.
